British insurance broker invests £65 million in European growth

Rotterdam elected mainland headquarters

Rotterdam, April 26, 2023 - With British insurance broker Superscript growing five times its size in two years, Europe beckons. With investments totaling £65 million, the company is set to further expand its services, with Rotterdam headquartered in continental Europe. The British see the port city as a rising star in the FinTech field, making it an excellent base for Superscript's ambitions. The company aims for world leadership in SME insurance targeting fast-growing European tech companies, mostly startups and scale-ups. Its offerings include insurance in particular technology and financial areas, including crypto and digital assets.

Transparency, ease of use, more competitive price
Within Superscript's operations, data plays a central role. All technology is developed in-house, which enables the ambitious company to go further than traditional companies. That far-reaching technical knowledge allows Superscript to move faster and take bigger steps than other insurers. Insurance risks are assessed more accurately, providing greater transparency, ease of use and a more competitive price. A godsend for fast-growing tech companies, which traditionally face limited supply in the European insurance sector. This often includes high(er) premiums.

Strong insurance market
For a long time, Superscript did not have to think about its new location on the European mainland. Rotterdam is rapidly developing into an important place in terms of technological progress. Our country ranks fifth in Europe in terms of the number of startups per capita, according to a recent report by organizational consulting firm McKinsey. On the Global Innovation Index, the Netherlands gets sixth place. Startups founded in our country are expected to have a total market capitalization of €250 to €400 million between 2022 and 2030. On top of that, the Netherlands has a strong insurance market, thanks in part to the work of regulator Authority Financial Markets (AFM).

Valuable addition
Cameron Shearer, CEO of Superscript, is pleased with the choice of Rotterdam: "The Netherlands is home to some of the largest FinTech companies in Europe. The entrepreneurial mentality and talented employees make for a perfect match with Superscript's operations. So it feels very natural to locate our European operations in Rotterdam. To further underline this, we have linked up with the Upstream festival, which takes place in the city from May 23 to 25. I will be speaking there about the why of insurance, as the lack of knowledge about it often leads to problems for startups and scale-ups. We want to change that!"

Lars Crama, Upstream Festival organizer, adds: "For technology startups and scale-ups, a good insurance partner is essential. Many traditional companies cannot keep up with the speed at which the new economy is evolving. Superscript offers flexibility and customized insurance solutions; exactly what is needed to cover the risks of a rapidly evolving market. Cameron Shearer's knowledge and experience is a valuable addition to our festival. This innovator in the insurance world fits perfectly in Rotterdam, with its growing startup and scale-up climate, strategic location and strong tradition in insurance. In short: welcome!"
